NBC News interactive storytelling

Using engaging, interactive online experiences to bring news stories and data to life for an audience of millions.

Creating news junkies
In my time at NBC News, I worked on a multi-talented team of journalists, developers and designers. We paired those skills with UX/UI and editorial know-how to make interesting, interactive projects. We made stories engaging and immersive. We made news addictive.

Candidates & issues

This tool allowed our audience to learn about candidates’ stances on key issues in the run-up to the 2008 Presidential election. Each candidate-issue pairing in the grid contained resources that allowed users to learn about the candidate’s stance on that issue as well as a rating meter that allowed users to rank their level of agreement with the candidate on that issue. This project received a Silver Award from the Society for News Design.

Before & after slider

I saw a newsroom need, quickly prototyped a working example of the slider, got editorial and creative feedback and buy-in and then developed a robust, reusable product for real-world use. I had complete creative control from start to finish, and delivered on a short timeline. The slideshow tool was used to show scenes from news events like post-earthquake Haitithe devastation in Japan after the 2011 tsunami and the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Battle of the Bags

This interactive package I developed tied together videos, audio interviews, photo slideshows and surveys into one coherent storyline that explored the classic “paper or plastic?” question. It was a 2008 ONA Multimedia Feature finalist in the large site category.

Gulf Coast’s Struggle

A unique resizing image user interface I created to show the story of Gulf Coast locations affected by Hurricane Katrina. It took first place in the 2008 NPPA “Best of Photojournalism” competition in the “News Photo Gallery” and “Best Picture Gallery” categories.

Made in the USA

I created this interactive, multimedia timeline to celebrate the U.S. population reaching 300 million. It used Census data spanning back to the country’s beginnings, bringing the numbers to life and showing key milestones and interesting trivia.
